What we read while not marrying Chelsea Clinton…
- John S reviewed Inception last week, a movie that managed to go through the cycle of “universal acclaim” to “critical backlash” before it even opened. Roger Ebert, who liked the movie, charted the progress of its reception on his blog.
- An evolving and ever more comprehensive list of the greatest magazine articles ever written. And yes, two of the top seven are by DFW; and yes, you could have picked about a dozen more.
- More bad pub for LeBron, who was the subject of an Arash Markazi story ESPN spiked (not like the network and Bron Bron have a cozy relationship or anything). Will Leitch mocks lightly here. Even Michael Showalter has thoughts on LeBron. Maybe he can book James for an episode of The Michael Showalter Showalter…
- Speaking of comedians, as part of his Summer Mega-Mailbag, Bill Simmons ranks the best comedians for every year since 1975. Simmons vindicates Josh by claiming that Season 3 of Curb Your Enthusiasm was his favorite. Meanwhile, Sean McCarthy, on his worthwhile comic’s comic blog, offers his thoughts on each of Simmons picks.
- The Simpsons Movie has been a bit of a contentious thing between John S (who hates it) and Tim (who defends it). Dead Homer Society‘s dissection of the film’s commentary is a definitive point for John. The most damning quote? “We really wanted to write this movie for people who weren’t that familiar with the Simpsons.” Also, yesterday was the date of Lisa’s wedding in the largely well-received but not Tim-favorite episode, “Lisa’s Wedding.” So close to Chelsea’s.
- This post has about as good a description of The Iliad as you’re likely to find.
- If you haven’t heard of Tennessee gubernatorial candidate Basil Marceaux yet, well, here’s Stephen Colbert on the man who introduced himself as “BasilMarceaux.com.” And here is said website. Marceaux, like all great politicians, is immune to the criticism.
- Our disappointed reaction to the headline: “Oh, they meant verbally and NOT physically.”
