Real World/Road Rules Challenge: Cutthroat, The Grand Finale

“I want the longest, hardest final. It’s going to physically strenuous, but I don’t know… I’ve just always been good at these things.”—Abram

“I’m running this final for freedom. I’m running for freedom more than anything.” —Brad

Say what you will about various seasons of The Challenge—and Cutthroat has been particularly disappointing—but the final episodes are almost always good. MTV’s insistence on designing challenges that are so physically demanding is often a negative during the season, since it leads to too many disqualifications, but it’s great for the finale: The physical demands of the challenge push people to their breaking point, which often reveals tensions and weaknesses that have been latent on a team all season long.

So even though Cutthroat has been a subpar season, there was a lot to look forward to in last night’s episode, and it didn’t disappoint. It started with the Gulag matchups set up last week: Derrick vs. Tyler and Emily vs. Paula. They were playing the same game that Ty had lost back in Week 5 (it has some weird name, like Pole Me Over, but I can’t remember it), which favored the size of Tyler and Emily respectively. Derrick, as usual, put up a good fight, but neither he nor Paula could overcome their diminutive statures. Continue reading

“I think it’s something with fire” —Brad

“I’m gonna go out on a limb and say if it’s against the Geneva Convention, they’re probably not going to make us do it in a challenge” —Dan

Man, all TJ Lavin has to do is show up and it scares the crap out of the contestants.*

*Speaking of TJ, reports say that he is getting better and should make a full recovery in time.

Before last night’s Gulag, TJ stopped by the house and mysteriously told Eric and Luke to shave their faces, leading to a rash of speculation about what the actual Gulag event would involve. Brad pointed out that any hair on your face could catch fire, so they’d probably ask you to shave… Continue reading

Real World/Road Rules Challenge: Cutthroat, Week 3 Power Rankings

“Hang in there, TJ.” —Ayiiia

Like MTV, John S would like to send his thoughts to TJ Lavin, who unfortunately got into a nasty bike accident last week and was put into a medically induced coma. Lavin’s been showing positive signs recently, and we know he’s no quitter, so there’s reason to be optimistic. Let’s hope he pulls through, because I can’t imagine a better host for The Challenge.

This was, in all honesty, one of the meanest, nastiest, and ultimately most depressing episodes in Challenge history. Katie got into a fight with Emily after she was voted into the Gulag. Ty, in trying to defend Emily, got into his own fight with Katie and eventually threatened to hit Katie, which made Katie so mad that she had to be restrained and calmed down by Brandon. Eventually, Katie herself broke down and confessed to Brandon that she was only acting out because she was sad and her feelings were hurt. Continue reading
